CTO-as-a-service
The technical co-founder
you haven't found yet.
You can't hire a real CTO on a seed budget, and every month without one, architecture decisions get made by whoever's cheapest and loudest — and you pay for them at scale.
CTO-as-a-service is fractional senior technical leadership: architecture, hiring and build judgement from a named principal, without the executive salary — with an honest off-ramp to your own full-time CTO designed in from the start.
30 minutes with a founding principal — the person who'd do the job.
The definition, plainly
What is CTO-as-a-service?
CTO-as-a-service — also called a fractional CTO — gives a startup fractional access to senior technical leadership: the architecture decisions, technology strategy, engineering hiring and build oversight a Chief Technology Officer provides, for a fraction of an executive salary. It suits ventures that need CTO-grade judgement before they can afford, or justify, the full-time role.
The difference from our build service is intent: build engagements deliver a product; CTO-as-a-service delivers leadership — including leadership of engineers who aren't ours. It is embedded technical leadership, not an outsourced development contract.
Architecture ownership
the irreversible decisions made and documented at principal level.
Technology strategy
stack, build-vs-buy, technical roadmap tied to the business plan.
Engineering hiring
scoping, interviewing and levelling your technical hires with you.
Build oversight
code review standards, delivery cadence, vendor and team accountability.
The investor room
technical diligence answered by someone who can defend the decisions.
A person, not a rotating bench
Who is the CTO? A named principal.
The service is led by a co-founder of the studio — the same engineering leadership that runs Entry Life's own builds. You get one accountable person in your stand-ups and your board calls, backed by the studio's in-house engineering team when the work needs hands.
You can check the delivery record before you commit — that's the point of a named principal.
How this ends
The graduation path — how this ends
1. Lead
The principal carries the CTO function while the venture can't yet justify the full-time role.
2. Build the case
We tell you when you've outgrown us — team size, complexity and stage make the trigger objective, not emotional.
3. Hire your real CTO
We help scope, interview and land them — then hand over a documented function, not a mystery.
A service designed to make itself redundant is easier to trust while you have it.
How it combines
Leadership that can also ship — and deploys into funds.
- With the studio
Leadership that can also ship.
When the roadmap needs hands, the same principal can deploy the studio's build capability behind it — one accountable team from decision to delivery. When it doesn't, the leadership stands alone over your own engineers or vendors.
Product & technology → - For funds
Interim CTO, deployable.
A portfolio company loses its technical lead, or diligence surfaces problems that need senior ownership: CTO-as-a-service deploys as interim leadership with reporting your partners can read — and the same graduation path to a permanent hire.

What founders ask before they start.
In practice, very little — they name the same thing: senior technical leadership on a part-time, fractional basis rather than a full-time executive hire. We use “CTO-as-a-service” to make one point explicit: you get a named principal backed by a studio's engineering bench, not a lone consultant. The leadership is the service; the bench is there when the roadmap needs hands.
No — and the distinction is the point. Outsourced development delivers a product to a specification. CTO-as-a-service delivers judgement: which architecture, which hires, which build-vs-buy call, and the technical answers your investors will demand. The principal leads your engineers or vendors, not only ours. If all you need is a product built, that's our build service, and we'll tell you so.
One named principal, a co-founder of the studio, accountable in your stand-ups and board calls. You can check the delivery record before you commit. When execution needs hands, the studio's in-house engineering team works behind the principal — but the leadership, and the accountability, stays with one person.
By design, when you've outgrown it. The graduation path is built in: the principal carries the CTO function, tells you objectively when team size, complexity and stage justify a full-time hire, then helps you scope, interview and land that CTO — handing over a documented function. A service built to make itself redundant is easier to trust while you have it.
Structure and commitment are scoped to your stage on the intro call, where we'll also tell you honestly if a full-time hire or a contractor would serve you better.
Stop tossing coins
Bring your next technical decision. Meet the person who'd own it.
The intro call is with the principal, not a salesperson. If what you actually need is a full-time hire or a good contractor, we'll tell you that in the first thirty minutes.
